Measuring flow conditions at a relief channel inlet near Hurwenen

In 2014 a relief channel for the river Waal has been realized near Hurwenen. An inlet allows a limited amount of water to flow from the river into the relief channel to make sure the water is being refreshed and to keep conditions for nature development optimal. However observations showed that the current velocity and direction downstream of the inlet was different than expected, causing undesired erosion and damage to the inlet.

Aqua Vision was asked by Tauw bv to measure the current conditions (velocity and direction, discharge) upstream and downstream of the inlet, obtain bottom track profiles and record the influence of passing ships on the current conditions. The results were presented in a “Digital Current Atlas” showing a comprehensive view of the flow conditions.
