Continuous salinity measurements at the bottom of the Nieuwe Waterweg Rotterdam

The Port of Rotterdam has asked Aqua Vision to perform continuous salinity measurements at the bottom of the Nieuwe Waterweg near Rotterdam.  This data will be used with the OSR model (Operationeel Stromingsmodel Rotterdam) to see what the effect is of deepening of the waterway on the salinity concentration.

To obtain the requested data Aqua Vision has deployed a sub bottom frame mounted with a CTD (Teledyne RD-Instruments CiTaDel) and Pop-up buoy (Teledyne Benthos & DeepWater Buoyancy). The frame is placed at one of the deepest points of the Nieuwe Waterweg and will stay there for approximately 18 months. The frame is equipped with an acoustic release that can be activated from the surface. Once activated the floating section of the pop-up buoy will release, rising to the surface along with a rope in order to lift the frame. Once every 2 to 3 months the frame will be lifted and the data will be retrieved.
